Healthy Homes, Healthier Lives: News

New Healthy Homes, Healthier Lives film and support material

We have just launched a short film with supporting materials that illustrate how housing conditions can contribute to poor health, particularly amongst older and vulnerable people. The package was commissioned by the Department of Health’s Care Services Improvement Partnership’s Housing Learning and Improvement Network and is available as either a DVD or CD Rom.

The film focuses on what older people themselves have to say about how their home impacts on their health and the package includes supporting materials: Discussion Sheets to expand upon the issue, focus on key questions and encourage debate, Facts and Figures, Policy Summary, Self Training Toolkit, Website Links, Checklists and Planning Tools.

The materials would be useful in a range of settings, including group service commissioning meetings, cross sector training and group sessions, and for the Continued Professional Development of individual workers. The package is also aimed at lecturers who are training the next generation of health and social care sector staff.

To order a FREE copy contact housinglin@eac.org.uk. Please reference your message “Healthy Homes”, state your preferred format (CD Rom or DVD) and provide your name, title and full postal address including postcode.

Healthy Homes Awareness Training for the Health Sector

Our Healthy Homes Awareness Training for the health sector has started in the South West. During the following months we will be rolling out the programme on a regional basis. The training supports a range of PCT targets, priorities and new developments including:

  • the support of people with long term conditions
  • reducing falls and hospital admissions, improve discharge
  • tackling health inequalities
  • increased independent living in the community
  • the Single Assessment Process
  • effective cross sector working
A typical session takes 3 hours, during which delegates will explore the main links between housing and health and will consider the positive action they could take to support safe and healthy independent living amongst patients. We come to your venue so no travelling time is involved.

Sessions are designed for groups of between 12 and 20 people from the health and social care sector including those whose role involves:

  • face-to-face contact with patients eg. specialist community health services, older person’s services, occupational therapy, community matrons, district nurses
