Healthy Homes Pack for Older People

This Healthy Homes Pack for Older People is designed to be used at small informal sessions and events, such as presentations to groups and meetings, lunch groups, community get-togethers etc. It’s aim is to raise awareness amongst older householders about the impact their housing can have upon their health.

It is designed to provide a light, inter-active session that looks at:

  • the effects of poor housing on people's health
  • the actions householders can take to improve their housing conditions
  • the local agencies that are there to help with maintenance, adaptations and related housing issues

It is the ideal medium for raising awareness about local projects and initiatives that link housing to poor health.

The Healthy Homes Pack for Older People contains a Power Point presentation, quiz, self assessment checklist and information to cover the following topics:

  • home repairs and improvements
  • adaptations and living independently
  • home safety and accident prevention particularly with regard to falls
  • energy efficiency
  • home security
  • move on: alternative housing options for older people
  • starter kit for local directory of resources

At the end of the session, participants should be encourage to go home and carry out an assessment of the potential health risks in their own homes, using the checklist “Is Your Home Good for Your Health?!

The Powerpoint presentation can be shortened or adapted to reflect your local situation, and we suggest that you use your own case studies and photographs wherever possible.

Click on Sample Handouts for a copy of our publication The Effects of Poor Housing on Health, a Useful Contacts List and suggestions for other leaflets to include in your delegates packs.

Click on In Good Repair for a copy of this publication, which is referred to in the presentation. It is a source of reliable information for householders whose homes need maintenance or adaptation.
