Healthy Homes, Healthier Lives Training Kit

This Healthy Homes, Healthier Lives Training Kit has been designed for use in half-day training sessions with frontline health, social care and housing staff.

It builds upon the experience of the Bristol Care & Repair Service and their successful (Department of Health Award winning) 'Health Homes Assessment Training', which has already been delivered to over 1,000 front-line health, housing and social care professionals in Bristol. It has proved to be a great boost to the Bristol Care & Repair's standing with the health sector and has helped them in securing funding for their handyperson and home from hospital schemes.

The aims of the Training Kit are to increase knowledge of:

  • the effects of poor housing on people's health
  • the actions that can be taken to improve housing conditions
  • who can help to improve people's housing conditions
The Training Kit contains a Power Point presentation, exercises, illustrative case studies and information pages that cover the following topics:
  • home repairs and improvements
  • adaptations and living independently
  • home safety and accident prevention particularly with regard to falls
  • energy efficiency
  • home security
  • move on: alternative housing options for older people
  • starter kit for local directory of resources
The Training Kit is in three sections:

  1. Getting Started
  2. The Course
  3. Sample Handouts

Click on Getting Started for guidance notes that highlight many of the points that you should consider as you plan and deliver the training.

Click on The Course for the full Powerpoint presentation, trainers' notes, case studies and their suggested answers, as well as additional information to help you deliver the training. The Powerpoint presentation can be shortened or adapted to reflect your local situation, and we suggest that you use your own case studies and photographs wherever possible.

Click on Sample Handouts for a copy of our publication The Effects of Poor Housing on Health, a Useful Contacts List and suggestions for other leaflets to include in your delegates packs.
